Artist's Statement Resumé
Cafe Sketches and Figure Drawing create a foundation for my work. Watching people move; how they walk. Observation.
My café sketches are very loose, simple. I approach my work as if I were making entries into a journal. I enjoy filling my sketchbook to capture the image perceived as quickly as possible. I begin working directly in ink. The use of a reed pen and brush with china ink enables me to instantly interpret my environment. A line, at once flowing, yet structured, allows the suggestion of movement.
The gestural figures from cafés feed other pieces. I believe a line resulting from a gesture can suffice if it is just. This is why the sketch is at the heart of my painting.
I tend to be realistic, representational in my figure drawing. I enjoy the challenge of creating the likeness of a person; their mood, their expression. I like to move around the model and discover new perspectives and compositions. As I become more familiar with the model, I start to bring their personality into the work. I don't erase my lines. What is left are searching line; a map of line-work showing how I constructed the figure.
